The Old Schoolhouse Coffee Shop, St Abbs

St Abbs harbour

A newly opened and as such, little known coffee shop provided a very welcome stop last weekend, for what was intended to be a quick cup of tea.

The Old Schoolhouse Coffee Shop in the east coast village of St. Abbs however, proved too much of a temptation so we relented and stayed for lunch.

The uncharacteristically bright and airy former school building retains it’s high ceilings and large rooms and now houses some wonderful artwork and exhibitions offering a relaxed and easy atmosphere, in which to enjoy homemade, freshly prepared food.

There is an enthusiastic buzz about the place untypical of a new launch; various people busying themselves with work in the exhibition or the grounds outside; welcoming and refreshingly unique.

The menu is small but comprehensive, covering everything you may wish for a light lunch or snack with some delicious home baking thrown in too. A specials board, from which I chose a wonderful tomato and lentil soup, changes daily and reflects fresh produce sourced that morning.

Happy, welcoming staff complete the picture, all of which sits at the head of the village with spectacular views over the harbour and the sea beyond – an ideal stop for those exploring the marvellous east coast walks and perhaps the Nature or Marine Wildlife Reserves or the Visitor Centre of St Abbs head.
