The Causewayside Apartment @ The Southside, Edinburgh

Venturing south of The Royal Mile and onto The Meadows, a further five-minute walk brought us to the door of a non-stereotypical building; Georgian architecture a seeming world away; and the doorway of number 215 Causewayside.

Industrial in appearance, the unique façade represents one of the many delights of the Old Town, joyously preserved and a contradiction to the very modern interior.

A print works in a previous life, number 215 Causewayside has been developed inside into a contemporary, open-plan living space; wood floors, modern bathroom and two bedrooms, styled in a minimalist fashion. The personal touches however at 215 make it a unique and welcoming space with several homely touches, a reflection of the personality of the owner; always nice to see and an aspect which sets this city apartment, well apart from others within the same price range.

Indeed, upon arrival, we were met by the proprietor, who offered us a real insight into the building’s history and its story through the decades. A rather nice personal touch and so different from an impersonal hotel stay – perfect for families or couples looking for an added element to their Edinburgh adventure and for those who want to truly experience the locale.

Personal recommendations of local restaurants, shops and bars were a superb and very useful addition, as my knowledge of the Old Town, sadly, has diminished through the years, so it was heartwarming to see local businesses thriving and offering a welcoming dimension to the area.

The ‘city centre’ a short taxi ride or 30 minute walk; the requirement for which, disappeared as our discovery of this friendly neighbourhood continued and we found Causewayside to be a unique village – so true of many areas of Scotland’s Capital.

As is typical of many of The Edinburgh Address properties, the need to venture out is limited and the desire to do so does weaken, as discoveries are unearthed within the property. A superbly well-equipped kitchen meant that cooking an evening meal became a rather appealing option, with every cooking utensil and multiple spices to hand. Open to a dining area and further to the lounge area; cooking at 215 is a social occasion and perfect for a family break. Family games, a library of DVDs and an abundance of reading material, means there is always something to do, when not out exploring, and again, perfect for a family holiday with younger members to cater for.

Truly a revelation in the heart of the Old Town, The Causewayside Apartment opens up new opportunities for exploring Edinburgh’s Southside, within a friendly and welcoming community.
